"Lift Our Hearts To Higher Ground"
A song to inspire compassion in our homes, schools, communities and the world.
In 2008, Karen Armstrong won the TED Prize and was granted a wish. She wished the world would come together to write a ‘Charter of Compassion‘ – a document that would venture to find common ground in ‘all’ spiritual and religious practices; the thing we all refer to as ‘the Golden Rule’. “Treat all others as you want to be treated.” This simple, yet ancient philosophy of kindness and respect toward others is worth getting excited about, especially in a world that so desperately needs it.
The unveiling of the Charter was held on November 12th, 2009. It is a document filled with hope and possibility. As part of the festivities, I began working on a song with co-writers Dawn Kenney and Christine Hatch. While we were in the studio recording, we realized the addition of a choir would really help ‘lift’ the song. Working along side Scott Rossley – Music teacher in Lancaster, MA, and Director Pam Cross, we set up a portable studio and recorded the "Mary Rowlandson Select Choir". Also included in the choral assembly are the “Luster Dust Singers” from Waltham, MA.
Watch the official Charter for Compassion video and catch a glimpse of yours truly reading one of the lines when it was taped in New York City, and add your name to the list of affirmers!
I also assembled a group of Sign Making friends to create “Inspirational Word Art” – words that we as artists felt captured the spirit of the Charter, and invite you to have a look at our work.
